When it comes to achieving your health and wellness goals, or any goal for that matter, creating a solid mindset is 90% of the challenge! In my health coaching practice I talk a lot about having a positive mindset. Maybe some of you are wondering what exactly is your mindset anyhow?
What is your mindset?
By definition, your mindset is the assumptions, attitudes and beliefs you have toward yourself and the world. It influences how you think, react and behave in any given situation. It’s often said that there are two different types of mindsets - “growth” and “fixed”.
“Growth” & “Fixed” Mindset
When you have a mindset that is focused on growth, your abilities, efforts and positive attitude all contribute to being able to meet your goals and achieve the life you dream for yourself.
If your mindset is fixed and entrapped by what you perceive to be true (your limiting beliefs), you will have a much harder time achieving your goals and dreams. When you have a mindset that is fixed and focused on limiting beliefs (such as, “I’m shy so I will never be good at public speaking”) you end up self-sabotaging and do not give yourself a fair opportunity to succeed. You believe that your abilities are a fixed trait and cannot be changed.
As a coach, I focus on helping you cultivate a growth mindset. We work together to bring a new perspective to any limiting beliefs you have about your situation and your abilities. Bringing awareness and flipping the switch from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset really is the first step to being successful in achieving your goals. So many of us look for the solution to our problems without first addressing what is going on in our own minds. Before you can do the hard work necessary to reach your goals you must first believe that it’s possible, believe that you are capable and believe that you deserve it.
“DO OR DO NOT. THERE IS NO TRY”.
I have been using the quote from Yoda a lot lately (you remember him…the funny little pointy eared Jedi master from the Star Wars trilogy). I love this quote and think it speaks volumes about mindset. Yoda directs this at Luke Skywalker after Luke is frustrated that he cannot raise his crashed and sunken X-Wing fighter out of a bog. Luke is frustrated and tells Yoda that he cannot do it. Yoda encourages him. Luke responds with “I’ll try”. Yoda quips back the famous quote “Do or Do not. There is no try.”
When we say “try” we are already setting ourselves up for the possibility of failure and living in a fixed mindset. We never actually commit. In the background all of our weaknesses and excuses are just waiting to give us an “out” for when we don’t accomplish something. We let ourselves off the hook. At the end of the day, this actually limits us and keeps us from living to our full potential.
How is your mindset these days?
When you focus on shifting our mindset from one that is “fixed” (full of overwhelm, negative self-talk, self doubt and pessimism) to one that is “growth” (possibilities, hard work, self love, persistence) we open the door for all kinds of wonderful experiences.
